Couple and Family Therapy

Support in crises

Infertility Counselling

with expertise and passion

Welcome

As a family therapist, I have been offering fertility counselling as well as couples and family therapy since 1993. I have supported people in a wide variety of situations: before and during fertility treatment, following miscarriages, with questions regarding sperm or egg donation, and considering a life without children.

In the 1990ies, when I began working with families built by donor insemination, there was hardly any literature, little research and even fewer counselling services available. Today, things have become much more open. At the same time, new questions have arisen: what about the identity of people conceived via third party reproduction, how do families fare when have have a structure that is very different from what we consider the norm, where do you draw limits when confronted with all the possibilities offered by reproductive medicine.

To this day, I consider it a privilege to have been able to accompany these developments over many decades.

I have learnt that there is no single ‘right’ way of building a family. But it helps not to have to walk that path alone.

What is important to me:

People come to me with a wide variety of questions. Some are just starting fertility treatment, others are considering sperm or egg donation, whilst others are seeking guidance after many years of struggling to conceive.

I believe that people are best placed to make the right decisions when they are well-informed and feel able to express their thoughts openly. That is why listening, respect and supportive guidance are central to my approach.

You don’t need to have the ‘right’ answers when you come to see me. Often, a good conversation begins precisely where questions remain unanswered.

My areas of expertise:

  • psychosocial fertility counselling for single people and couples
  • Counselling on starting a family through sperm or egg donation and similar treatments
  • Educating children conceived through sperm, egg or embryo donation and/or surrogacy
  • Counselling and support following miscarriage or stillbirth
  • Couples and family therapy during times of crisis
  • Further training and professional development for specialists

Does any of these topics apply to you? Then you’ve come to the right place! I invite you to have a look around my website.

If you subscribe to my ‘News’ (see below), you’ll receive updates at irregular intervals about TV programmes, radio features, new books, etc. on the topics of ‘the desire to have children’ and ‘reproductive medicine’ from Germany

Here you’ll find an in-depth interview  with me about fertility counseling (in German).

Please note that I have not translated my complete website. Should you need any information, ring me or send me an email.

for clients...

Many people are initially reluctant to seek counselling. However, it often helps to discuss your thoughts, concerns and decisions with someone outside your immediate circle. Seeking counselling does not mean that you cannot cope on your own – it simply means allowing yourself to seek support when a situation is particularly stressful or complex.

If your hopes of having a child cannot be realised, counselling can help ensure you are fully informed about both medical and non-medical options. Counselling also helps you make an informed decision for or against medical assistance.

If you do decide to go ahead, counselling can play a key role in helping you cope better with the emotional rollercoaster that is often part of medical treatment. Ultimately, for some people, it is important to be able to set appropriate boundaries (“Could we consider sperm donation?”) and to consider a ‘Plan B’ in good time. • Information and support for third party reproduction:

  • I have written many books for children and adults, on support during treatment, on disclosure, and for professions.
  • I use Instragram to post about developments in this area and about new books, see below for the latest posts.
